We are a country and a society washed in myths. We watch movies that resolve problems in two hours--usually with a combination of violence and simplicity. In history we study the Great Events performed by Great Men (mostly white and privileged) that brought us to the better place we now enjoy. Politically, we believe that one election cycle or a series of laws can fix our problems or that once a problem is fixed it stays that way. More than ever before, perhaps, we believe that the President is omnipotent and he can master any situation and solve the problem--just like in the movies.
